Lanikai Pillbox Hike
Oahu, Hawaii
I visited Oahu, Hawaii for the first time in May, and I was amazed at how naturally beautiful the state was. As always, when I am traveling, I have a list of things to do that is impossibly long. This hike was on my MUST DO list, and I am stoked it was. Lanikai Pillbox Hike is a quick, fun, hike with some of the best views I have ever seen.
Lanikai Pillbox Hike, also known as Also known as Ka’iwa Ridge Trail, is located in Kailua, Hawaii, right across the street from the Mid Pacific Country Club. You can find parking on Kaelepulu Drive. I ended up parking right after I turned off of Aalapapa Dr. and walked up to the trailhead from there. It shouldn’t be too difficult to find a spot somewhere on the surrounding residential streets just make sure to check the signage, and be respectful, as it is a residential area.
The trail is considered intermediate and the incline starts almost immediately after entering from the trailhead. There are some places where it is necessary to use ropes to climb up steeper inclines. Make sure you are prepared, and are wearing good hiking shoes. This area of the island gets a good bit of rain, so the trails are often muddy! If you plan to hike this trail at sunrise, like I did, make sure to bring a flashlight. It is dark, and especially tricky if you don’t know where you are going.
Look at the trail meandering down to the left. As you can see it is very thin and very steep!
After a few minutes climbing you will begin to see some amazing views of Kailua. Shortly thereafter, you will begin to see views of the Mokulua Islands.
After climbing for about 20-30 mins you will reach the first pillbox. The pillboxes are covered in graffiti and starkly contrasts the natural surroundings. The artwork is stunning and its a great place to catch your breath and enjoy the view.
This is where I decided to stop and watch the sunrise. It was a great reward for the effort I exerted on the climb! The Mokulua Islands are easily viewed from here. They are seabird sanctuaries and are protected by the state. You can kayak to the islands from Kailua beach, North Mokulua even has a beach that is open to the public.
If you wish to continue your hike, the next pillbox is visible from here! If you are feeling energized to keep going, the trail eventually loops around. It takes you back to the main road which you will use to get back down to your car.
If you are visiting Oahu, I absolutely think this trail is a great way to spend an hour or two!
