Four of the highest peaks in Texas are located in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. This park is incredibly diverse with mountains, canyons, sand dunes, and desert areas. It is located just east of El Paso in Texas.
Check out our Youtube Video where we hike in McKittrick Canyon, walk out to the sand dunes and Hike Guadalupe Peak.
Guadalupe Peak is the highest peak in Texas. The grueling 4.1-mile hike leads you through 3,000 ft. of elevation gain. The views are incredible from the very beginning, but once you reach the peak you are on top of the world! The day I hiked this trail it was super windy the whole time. I could barely stand at the top as the gusts of wind were so strong!
The McKittrick Canyon Trail is known to some as the most beautiful hike in Texas and I can see why! This trail winds 6.8 miles (roundtrip) through the beautiful Chihuahuan Desert flanked by steep canyon walls. Eventually, the landscape becomes lusher as you hike further into the canyon along a stream. After hiking 2.4 miles you will see the entrance to Pratt Cabin. This is a perfect spot to rest your feet! You can relax in a rocking chair on the porch of this all stone cabin built in the 1930s. Once you have had some time to rest your feet, you can continue on to the grotto, a small cave surrounded by picnic tables.
Another popular hike in Guadalupe Mountains National Park is Devil’s Hall. This moderate trail winds back 3.6 miles through the canyons via a wash. There are a few steep sections and most of the trail is very rocky. Make sure to keep going past the steep steps and you will find the entrance to Devil’s Hall.
